Busting false beliefs about sleep training

Busting false beliefs about sleep training

One of the most common things we hear from parents after working with one of our sleep consultants is “I wish I’d done it sooner”. So we’re checking in with past clients to find out what stopped them from seeking help sooner.

Sleep training won’t work for my baby.

Michelle, mum of 6 month old Jack:

I had read all the books, blogs and guides and they worked, until they didn’t. By the time Jack was 6 months old we were spending hours walking or driving around for naps and even longer rocking, patting, holding, and feeding at bedtime.

Nothing seemed to work.

I was convinced sleep training wouldn’t work for my baby and in the end it was my husband that convinced me to at least look into it.

After my initial call with Emma I felt confident she’d find the right approach for our family.

Emma looked at everything from Jack’s diet, sleep environment, and timing of sleep, to his temperament and our parenting style.

It was a really holistic approach as she took the time to learn about our family and baby.

As we worked together over the next two weeks she provided scientific evidence to support what we were doing and a tailored approach that worked so well for all of us.

Emma, owner Baby Sleep Consultant:

Every child is unique but all babies have similarities when it comes to their sleep needs.

With a decade of experience helping over 50,000 parents, we know what works. Our approach is always based on the latest scientific research and with one-on-one consults we can really get to know each baby and family we work with, tailoring the solution to fit their particular needs.

I don't want to leave my baby to cry.

Alice, mum of 8 month old Eve:

I was so lucky with Evie in that she was a very chill baby.

She hardly ever cried and was a great wee sleeper in the first four months, until we ditched the swaddle. Initially we tried the Cry It Out method on our own but I just couldn’t handle the crying. It was so heart wrenching that we only lasted two days before giving up.

A couple of months on and I was at the end of my tether. We were spending hours trying to get her to sleep each night; she was waking multiple times and I’d taken to co-sleeping with her in the spare room just to get some rest.

When I started working with Emma I explained my fears around leaving Evie to cry and we decided on a gentle, in-the-room approach.

There were still tears but we were able to stay in the room with Evie to support her through the changes we were making.

After a few days I felt confident enough to give Evie the space to settle on her own and there were less and less tears each time.

Now I have a baby that can self settle in just a few minutes and a little crying doesn’t upset me like it used to.

Emma, owner Baby Sleep Consultant:

Critics of sleep training often pull out tired old arguments that leaving your baby to cry will cause stress, negatively impact attachment, and cause emotional and behavioural problems later in life.

This is simply not true and we have the scientific research to prove it!

Whether you opt for Cry It Out or a gentler in the room approach there will probably be some crying.

It’s normal and safe and most parents find it’s not that bad and well worth it in the end.

I don’t know what to do or where to start:

Michelle, mum of 6 month old Jack:

When you’re in the depths of sleep deprivation it’s hard to think straight. Even the smallest thing can be overwhelming and that was how I felt about sleep training. It all just seemed too hard.

I had all the info but didn’t know where to start. Naps, nights, routine, settling, it just seemed insurmountable. Emma was amazing. Right from the get go I could tell she knew what she was doing.

She broke everything down for us and created a clear, easy to follow plan. She literally changed our life in two weeks!

We don’t need the support of a sleep consultant

Alice, mum of 8 month old Eve:

Before working with Baby Sleep Consultant I thought I could go it alone. I’d read the theory and decided to try Cry It Out.

I was surprised at how hard it was; we only lasted two days before we couldn’t take it anymore.

When we were ready to try again I knew I needed extra support. My partner thought we could go it alone and didn’t want to fork out the cash for a sleep consultant but with some convincing I got him on board and he agreed to the two week support package. It made all the difference.

The personalised advice, care, and support was amazing.

It was like having our own little cheerleader, encouraging us every step of the way.

There were definitely times where I felt it wasn’t working and I wanted to quit but Emma assured us that ups and downs were normal and helped us to stay the course.

I’m so glad we did; sleep is so easy in our house now and I’m a total advocate for Emma and Baby Sleep Consultant.

Emma, owner Baby Sleep Consultant:

All my sleep consultants are mums first and foremost. They’ve experienced the sleep deprivation and challenges of new motherhood. They know that sleep training works and they want to help as many parents as possible. My team offers evidence-based solutions that work but I believe the real value lies in their extra care and support.

Getting no sleep is just part of being a mum.

Tracey, mum of 4 month old Matilda

I remember talking to a friend about how Matilda would only sleep on me during the day so I either had her in the front pack or was trapped underneath her on the couch or in bed.

I was breastfeeding her to sleep at night and she was waking 3-4 times overnight. It was exhausting.

I said something flippant like, “it’s all part of being a mum right?” and my friend called me out.

She told me that I deserve sleep and space to myself and that it’s ok to get help. Up until that point I never really questioned that it was all on me to get my baby to sleep, I really thought it was just part and parcel of being a mum.

My friend recommended Baby Sleep Consultant and I’ve never looked back. I can now put Matilda down for naps in her cot and my husband helps at bedtime and overnight.

Emma, owner Baby Sleep Consultant:

Sleep is so important to your wellbeing. We believe every family has the right to the sleep they need. Motherhood doesn’t have to be martyrdom; that’s why we’re here to help.

Taking care of yourself and your needs doesn’t make you a bad parent. If anything, when you’re well rested you’ll often find you have more patience and capacity to be a better parent.

If you’re thinking about sleep training but have some questions or concerns we haven’t covered here, find a consultant in your area, who will be happy to talk things through with you.
